New Global TB report (2016) and MDR-TB and Rif resistance TB burden in Africa-abstracted information

The Global TB report of 2016 is out a few weeks back (Global TB report. WHO. 2016). Estimated global, regional and country incidences (disease burdens) of the Multi-drug resistant TB and Rifampicin resistant TB are reported for the first time in this report.  Globally,a set of 30 high burden countries (for MDR/RR-TB) are defined based on the disease burden.  Some of these estimates are based new prevalence surveys conducted and on It is interesting to look at quick abstract of Africa i this regard. Below two slides are an attempt towards this end.
Slide 1- on estimated incidence of MDR/RR-TB in 8 high MDR-TB burden countries in Africa (2015)

Slide 2: Case detection (Aka)- treatment coverage in 2015- globally (with African countries high-lighted)

  Key summary points:
(1) Nigeria becomes country with highest burden of MDR-TB replacing South Africa, burden of the DR Congo is not far from the later.
(2) Population proportion wise Africa still contributes to about 19% of global MDR-TB/RR TB burden. Estimated contribution of Africa to world populations is about 16.3%.
(3) Eight High burden MDR/RR-TB countries account to about 75% of overall estimated MDR/RR-TB burden of Africa.
(4) Case detection gap to treatment is large. Case detection is now referred as "treatment coverage"- as a more focused term, mainly because these are the cases notified by the NTPs. " missed-to- diagnose" could be misnomer as estimated disease burdens, at the best, are estimates- generally point-estimates (with out trend based estimates).
(5) South Africa treatment coverage is exceptionally looks good, because of rapid molecular diagnostics implementation. Other countries need additional steps to take in this regard.
